High School Chess Team

Youth Activities (K-12 grade) -
Fall 2025

This program is for players of all grades interested in participating and competing in “over the board” OTB tournament chess. Face to face lessons will be longer with the purpose of competing as a team. Teams generally consist of players from the same grade and school. A minimum of 3 players are needed to be competitive.

Even though it’s possible every grade at every school could have its own team, “Chess Team” positions will be initially limited to between 13-22 students.

To qualify, students must try out. Try-outs will be free and may take the form of a tournament in September during the September meetings.

The top 22 students will be invited to participate that are rated 1,000 and higher.

Otherwise, the top 13 students will be invited.

Tournament fees are an additional cost if participants choose to participate in those extra events. Parents will be invited to participate in the “ISD 621 Chess Team Booster Club”. The boosters will be needed to help with transportation and some supervision for tournament play not covered by the registration fee.

Reduced Fees & Financial Assistance:
Youth who are residing within the Mounds View Public Schools boundaries and currently qualify for educational benefits and/or free/reduced lunch may be eligible for reduced fees and partial scholarships to qualifying Enrichment & Activities programs. Financial support is provided by the Ralph Reeder Food Shelf, District Community Education Scholarship fund and other community donors. Qualifying Enrichment and Activities will have a Financial Support/Educational Benefits fee rate that is 50% of the full fee for the program. If additional support is needed, please see the call 651-621-6020 and/or click here to complete the Youth Financial Assistance Request Form
